These guys are awesome. I've never found another band whose music can so quickly take me to a different time. If you love the mainstream, stay there. I care more about whether I enjoy the music than who takes credit for phrases of words in the lyrics. I will definitely go to a show if they ever make it out here.
I get thet they're from New Jersey, and that they are Springsteen fans - but as a fellow Springsteen fan it's hard for me to get excited about this when I hear blatant Springsteen references just listening to the 20 second blurbs here - "do the jump back jack"..."Dime store saints"..."back seats of (borrowed) cars"...etc. Plus the Woody Guthrie cover, and the Joe Strummer reference... it all just makes me want to listen to the Springsteen records I already won, rather than buy this.
So it sounds like Against Me lite, the early stuff at least. Or Billy Bragg and Wilco covering Woody Guthrie. And, its possible that Lucero fans will like it. But I don't get the Springsteenor Hold Steady Stuff at all. Worth listening to, if only to decide for yourself.
Highlights are 'We Came to Dance' and 'I'da Called You Woody, Joe.' 'Navasink Banks' sounds like Nebraska-era Springsteen. You can't go wrong with this.
I think Lucero fans will dig this album. Gives me that country rock vibe with plenty of heart that's missing from most the pretentious hipster albums on emusic. Great music to have in the background while you drink a beer or two with your friends. Springsteen would be proud.
Excellent debut from NJ's The Gaslight Anthem. It's like Social Distortion meets Springsteen meets modern punk. Great stuff. If you are into any of the aforementioned bands, Against Me!, The Hold Steady, etc. This is up your alley.

In the 40 years since Bruce Springsteen signed his first record deal, the New Jersey native has established himself as the bard of the Garden State — a rep that continues with the release of Wrecking Ball, his 17th studio album. But the Boss isn't the only hungry-hearted Jersey musician who's managed to get on the map. Herewith, an annotated atlas of where a few home-state heroes got their start. Click the… more »
It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »
