O’Death, Head Home
2007 | Label: Ernest Jenning Record Co. / IODA

Greg Jamie's vocal style has been described as a “baby manatee being ravaged by a pack of feral cougars,” the sound of a “deranged mystic” and the “bizarro world Alec Ounsworth.” It's pretty much all true. Jamie's compatriots in O'Death spend most of their time busily crafting death disco bluegrass, giving him the chance to go hog wild with whoops, shrieks and even, sometimes, honest-to-goodness lyrics. You may have a hard time making them out, sure. But it isn't hard to hear how good of a time Jamie is having — and that's entirely the point. For any fan of cowpunk, this is essential listening.

I saw them at the Hideout Block Party in Chicago. The bass player, drummer and fiddle player appeared to be deranged, the banjo player looked like the little brother who got kicked out of college his first semester, and the neatly dressed guitarist seemed like he wandered in from another band -- until he started singing. If you enjoy music that makes people say "What the hell are you listening to?!!" this album is for you.
