Ohsees (formerly OCS), Thee Oh Sees Sucks Blood
2007 | Label: Castle Face / IODA

It's hard enough to track down John Dwyer's various musical activities let alone digest them. Once you think you've got him pegged as a noise rocker (Pink and Brown), punk rocker (Coachwhips) or thrasher (Yikes), he goes out and crafts downtrodden doo-wop with the Ohsees. Of course, the Ohsees weren't always this way. Thee Oh Sees Sucks Blood sees Dwyer further yielding control to a number of band members that have infiltrated what was once a solo project.

Recorded “green” with Sub Pop artist Kelly Stoltz, the quintet slogs through a half-hour of gently, hypnotic rock that rarely aims for anything but the head. (Call it Beach House for punks.) But considering Dwyer's resume, it's hard to begrudge him a low-key affair. And, really, who can argue with the results? “Sucks Blood” sounds like a Galaxie 500 demo on ludes, “The Gouger” takes that template and adds some twang to the mix and “You Make Me Sick, Oh Yeah” revels in its own inertia. Not bad for a noise/punk/thrasher, eh?

Great album, but rename the tracks

figa

I bought the CD, and the track listing is the same as on the packaging, which is a little off. I emailed the band and they said track 6 is a noise interlude, and the other track names should be shifted down. It makes sense when you listen to it. With the correct numbering, "The Killer" comes through as an alternately lumbering and melodic lament, followed by "Ship", a queasy, chiming chantey.

Restless Ears Radio

By J. Edward Keyes, Editor-in-Chief

If you're like me, one genre is not enough. You need to skip from indie rock to roots reggae to extreme black metal to grimy old-school hip-hop -- all within the space of an hour. Life is too short to relegate yourself to just one kind of music. That's what my station, Restless Ears Radio, is all about. It's for the listener who answers the question, "What kind of music do you like?" not with… more »
