Extended Cut

ChronoSquall14

While adding this to Hissing Fauna would have made it soemthing of a magnum opus, it still works as its own damaged EP. It's more of the same, really, though encapsulated into a shorter span of five tracks and lacking the presence of Georgie Fruit. If you liked Fauna, just get this.

Vinyl Lovers!!!

Name

Vinyl Lovers will already be familiar with these songs as they are on side 4!!! Excited to finally have them portable. Great as alwyas from Of Montreal. Nice twist on the first track with the saxophone as opposed to using the trumpet which is the traditional instrument of choice among many elephant 6 groups. Nicely Done

An Appendix

auGust

A mostly reflective appendix to Hissing Fauna. None of these tracks are on the full-length, though keep in mind that "Voltaic Crusher" is on the Suicide Squeeze sampler. (Be smart, don't d/l twice.) These are great closer tracks coupled with the bounce of Fauna. The center tracks are mostly lower-keyed, meditative affairs until you hit the roller-coaster ride of "No Conclusion." Think Architecture in Helsinki's "In Case We Die (Parts 1-4)" and you'll know what I mean. All worth spending some time with... which is what I'm going to do right now.

Q&A: Of Montreal

By Barry Walters

Whether cavorting around the stage in ballet tights or turning his psyche onto skewed, Technicolor pop songs, Of Montreal main man Kevin Barnes puts so much of himself on display that it almost seems impolite to look. For over 15 years he's commandeered his continuously mutating studio project and live band, while simultaneously exploring his own multiple personalities, sexualities and spiritualities. Invigorating the psychedelic soul of 2008's Skeletal Lamping and 2010's False Priest with… more »

Of Montreal’s Little Red Coquette

By Michaelangelo Matos

Right — the Prince stuff. Let's start there. "Our Riotous Defects," track two of False Priest, Kevin Barnes's 11th album either with or as Of Montreal, channels Prince in a way that's even more direct than usual. Over the last few Of Montreal albums, Barnes hasn't been shy about his desire to come as close as possible to that sound and standard while still remaining his weirdo, hyperkinetic, Athens, Georgia-bred indie-pop self. But he's… more »

They Say All Media Guide

If you thought Kevin Barnes laid his soul out on the table for Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, wait till you get a hold of that album’s companion EP, Icons, Abstract Thee. The five-track release collects songs from the Hissing sessions that didn’t make it onto the full-length (vinyl-only bonus cuts, MySpace downloads, and other orphans) and offers them up like addenda to the epic breakup saga chronicled on the former album. Where Hissing succeeded in cloaking most of the hurt in metaphor, Icons relates the rest of the story with bald-faced frankness. From a heartfelt apology to his baby daughter (“Miss Blonde Your Papa Is Failing”) to the suicidal broodings of “No Conclusion,” the disintegration of Barnes’ marriage takes the center stage again — with the same bouncy, overblown, and jubilant songcrafting that tricked you into thinking Hissing was a “feel-good” album the first time you spun it. Lyrically dark, brooding, and self-defeating, Icons is anything but (as far as the music itself is concerned). Shut out the gloomy diary entries, and the EP shines as a catchy, summery, effervescent, day-driving soundtrack — full of DAW trickery and loopy fun — but if you follow along with the lyric sheet in hand, be prepared to feel a little tinge of guilt for snooping around in someone else’s journal. – J.
