Good indicator

Average-Nights-Jack

It might be over 10 years old but this album provides an excellent indicator of what was to come. Good mixture of sub-genres, good harmonies and strong song selection show what The Gourds would be capable of. The fact that they have gone on to bigger & better is testament to their talent. Well worth the download.

modern blue grass?

jin and juice was the main reason I downloaded this album. I like the traditional instrumentation with more up to date lyrics. All the tracks are growing on me.

I dig.

Caesonia

Granted I cherry-picked the ear candy here, just hearing about a pocketful of rubbers with a banjo in the background is worth stumbling onto this artist page. Good stuff. Ziggy Stardust is interesting to hear and Everybody's Missing the Sun has definite head bopping potential.

On this re-sequenced and expanded version of 1998′s Gogitchyershinebox EP, the highlight remains the band’s ramshackle acoustic rendition of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice.” But new covers of Nils Lofgren’s “Everybody’s Missing the Sun” and Billy Joe Shaver’s “Omaha” are equally as inspired. Bang-up arrangements of the traditional numbers “Dooley” and “Jones Oh Jones” are other standout tunes missing from the original release. Whether this album-length re-release was intended as a stopgap or as a reward to fans who missed out on the EP back when it was still in print, the significant new song additions make Shinebox worth its purchase price. – Brian Beatty
