For Franz Fans or Homophobes?

monkeyland

Cornbread Red covers other people's songs using a very simple formula. Are there pure Cornbread Red fans? My guess is that most Cornbread Red listeners are like me and just listen to the bluegrass covers of bands and songs we like. If that's the case, there's a clear failure on this Southern re-telling of Franz Ferdinand's eponymous debut. "Come and dance with 'her'?" There is no mistaking that the original "Michael" is about two men on the dance floor. If you can't handle the original content, don't bother doing it. If this is marketing to Franz fans, do it right or don't do it all.

I have the FF original. Listening to this version you can really hear the quality of the songwriting. Never been a listener of bluegrass, but this is great.

an *almost* excellent album. docked a star for the previously mentioned homophobia. cover a song as it was written, or don't cover it at all.

That goes with the Territory, but....

this is absurdly good! The idea seems so wrong, but really it just plays to how good these songs really are - would this work with Kaiser chiefs? No! If you're the kind of indie and rock peeps that like a bit of bluegrass now and then this is a great record and the aforementioned transgression - or lack of it - is something you're well acquainted with and easily forgivable on such a fine album.

HelloKev

Pawpaw for Jesus!! If I'm not mistaken, the original lyrics to "Michael" go something like "So sexy, I'm sexy, so come and dance with me Michael" So whats up with this "Dance with HER, Michael" bu11shit? Come on, a tribute? If you're gonna cover the song, at least sing the real lyrics.
