This is a wonderful collection with high, but not overpowering energy. This music works great for many different kind of occaisions and moods.

A must

Sometimes I find these duo records to be boring. Nice playing by two masters, but often on these records there is no connection. Not here. Each song has merit, and direction, spirit. The fine playing is expected, the clear vision and the ability to get there makes this my favorite of Bela's take on jazz.

Fresh Air

SteveWI

Some of the duets from these two artists work, some don't. Tracks like "Mountain" and "Joban Dna Nopia" seem to succeed. Not because the banjo and piano sound great together, but the interplay is kept simple and the interaction seems genuine enough to overide barriers created by instrumental blend. I am a longtime fan of Chic's playing but not of his grandiose conceptual efforts as of late ("To The Stars", "Ultimate Adventure"). There is no story to "illustrate" here to distract Chics interaction with Bela so in that sense this collaboration is a breath of fresh air with real musical excitement generated by two incredible players (from earth).

download rights

We can't download it in Japan, either. There are several other CDs I'd like which are similarly unavailable. We're paying the same membership fees as everybody else; when will this situation change?

No CAN Listen

It's unfortunate that some of the releases from the heavy names in jazz (including Dave Holland) are not available for download in Canada. Is emusic looking into changing this?

...if i didn't download anything else but this release for the rest of the year.. ..i still would have gotten my money's worth from e-music. what a terrific hour's worth of music, from 2 of the most creative jazz players alive.. ..I almost fell off my chair when I saw it listed. It hasn't left my CD player since...(hey, I'm old school, if I could have burnt it to my 8-track, I would have!!) This will win a grammy next year...no doubt! Savor the excellent playing of these two musical giants!! Whoever was responsible for getting this disc on-line... should get a big fat raise...thank you!

Aside from being legendary multiple Grammy-winning jazzmen on very different instruments, Chick Corea (piano) and Béla Fleck (the world’s premier jazz banjo master) have a shared love for collaboration and the infinite improvisational possibilities their chosen idiom offers them. In some ways, the two have been preparing for this masterful, musical dialogue-driven masterpiece for over ten years. Fleck, who has always credited Corea as being one of his chief influences, invited the pianist to play on the Flecktones’ Tales from the Acoustic Planet, as well as the group’s live CD Live Art. Some years later, in 2001, Corea found a spot for Fleck on his Rendezvous in New York DVD. Later, they toured as a duo, making the unique recording of The Enchantment an inevitable artistic extension of their on-stage chemistry. One of the standout elements is the fact that, instead of using their kinetic duality as a springboard for extended one-instrument solo sections, their percussive lines weave and intertwine beautifully throughout, like a mosaic determined to mine uncharted territory. The opening track, Corea’s “Señorita,” is lively, jumpy, and exotic, while Fleck’s “Spectacle” blends his country-plucking guitar with Corea’s dramatic, stride-influenced approach. This pattern follows throughout the disc, as the pianist’s compositions take on a spicy Latin flavor while the banjo man — on excursions like the folksy “Mountain” and the classic waltz vibe of “Waltse for Abby” — keeps the piano alongside him on the front porch. They also ease into an interesting classical call-and-response mode on Fleck’s “A Strange Romance.” The lone cover is a take on “Brazil” that swirls Fleck’s witty notes and Corea’s shimmering ivory flow. Sounds like the continuation of a beautiful friendship. Fleck’s “Spectacle” was nominated for a Grammy in 2007 as Best Instrumental Composition. – Jonathan Widran
