An Ivy League drag queen's version of punk.
2004 | Label: ZE Records / The Orchard

Now that the major record labels have relegated all but the most conventionally commercial acts to independent labels, it's hard to comprehend that in 1984 ZE convinced a division of PolyGram Records to think a young woman as pretty as Madonna but as ornery as Marianne Faithful might click with, say, Cyndi Lauper fans. With timely production by Don Was, Cristina swaps her debut's debutante disco for dilettante New Wave, and although her intonation is even more atrocious here, her lyrics are so wickedly witty that she skirts by on negative charm. Going to lyrical places her peers only read about in travel brochures, she sings, "My sheets are stained/ So's my brain/ What's a girl to do?," while on "Don't Mutilate My Mink," Cristina envisions an Ivy League drag queen's version of punk.

Wow

Rhinehart

This is a new wave gem, I'm sooo pleased I found it here. The tracks “He Dines Out On Death” and “Deb Behind Bars” took me by surprise. Excellent!

I like it but leave Madonna the F**k alone

Musync

Come on if Cristina had half the business talent that madge had she would have taken her damn tape to Mr Seymour Stein like Madge did. It was all meant to be. We can enjoy Cristina here on eMusic as it was meant to be! Stop putting Madonna down already! I am enjoying this though.

The second LP of a career cut too short.

Godozo

Cristina goes new-wave and funk. Every cut here worth getting (at least of the original LP, some of the extra stuff is more for documentary purposes). Sadly she became the victim of an envious backbiter who commented snarklily on her good looks getting her recorded, and she "retired." Who knows...maybe we wouldn't have needed Madonna had Cristina kept up and gotten some smarter support. Still, we have this and Doll In The Box as a reminder of what could have been.
