Grand National, A Drink And A Quick Decision
Label: Recall Records

Smooth electro-pop rarely gets its due. But don't spend too much time blaming the oft-awful purveyors of the form: otherwise you might miss the one's that are doing it right. Grand National is one of them. Their second album is full of the same tricks that made their debut such a slow-burning minor gem: understated songwriting, soaring often harmonized vocals and hooks galore. “Animal Sounds” does as good a job as any (although nearly everything here is of the same sterling quality): its slow arpeggiated keyboard welcomes you in, while Lawrence Rudd seduces you with his sweetened croon. Resistance, as they say, is futile.

Great band, horrible band name.

Hillhouse

I really dig these guys. Not all of their songs mind you...but many of them. I can put them on and sure enough, someone will ask me, "Who is this??"...Why does no one know who they are despite the gorgeous legs on their album covers? I think it's their name. Grand National. (Not a good name. Not good at all!!) But don't let that stop you from downloading. You would certainly be missing out.

should be bigger

Richtea

2 top albums from this band now. not sure why they don't get more of a fuss made about them? If scissor sisters can get big, these guys certainly can too! If you grew up in the 80's I defy you not to get into this stuff after only a few listens!

Trouble with Track 5?

Phronk

I had trouble getting track 5 to play in iTunes (though it worked fine in other software). It was showing up as a VBR stream rather than a regular mp3. I used a program called Foobar2000 to fix the file, by right clicking -> Utils -> Fix VBR header. Now it works fine. Just thought I'd post this in case others have the same problem with this great album. Hopefully eMusic will fix the file for future downloaders.

....and besides, those legs!

fulofunk

i'm diggin' this record. The vox & harmonies are breathy and relaxing and chording on these songs is way cool. it's great to hear acoustic piano dabbled here and there along with some tastey, smooth percussion and clever arrangments. The songs on this record definitely get better, so that by the end of the first listen i knew i had another great summer album to listen to-i am now an official Grand National fan. This is NOT a wasted set of DL's by any means, besides, those legs! and does anyone know the story behind the photo?
