Yeah, me too Guam

This is seriously cool.. I listened to my dads LP of Lonnie when I was 5!, the 1977 release. I loved it, now I am in my 20's this is right up my street...

Beck done Dr Lonnie style

djFLWB

Dr Lonnie Smith is one of the hammond b-3 greats and he spins Beck out with his usual soul jazz/groove style. I bought this on CD when it was released. For the most part the album is a solid set of instrumentals but you can skip tracks 6, 10 & 11 if you are watching your download volume.

Nothing much to say except this is one of the best finds I've personally stumbled across on eMusic.

Worth a Listen

Not every track works, but a few do. Try "Tropicalia" for starters.

Hot Notch

This is, at first sight, a nightmare. But knowing Dr Lonnie Smith's reputation and history, I had to give it a listen. The playing and arrangements are top notch. Anyone who loves the late 60's Jazz/Groove movement should at least give this a try. Great players. A bloody great record!

more than a tribute

Emusica

It's unfortunate that this album has 'tribute' in the title given the amount of items on this site with that moniker which are less than worthy. However, this album is no mere 'tribute album' it's a rollicking funky jazz set of tunes that happen to have been written by Beck. No vocals at all, this is jazz music in the Grant Green/Jimmy Smith style. Not muzak at all, this is just a great band covering some fine material with an unorthodox choice. Recommended.

They Say All Music Guide

On this unusual set, organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, with guitarist Doug Munro, and (on five of the 11 selections) tenor-saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman do the improbable. On Boogaloo to Beck: A Tribute, Smith takes a full set of songs by rock performer Beck and turns them into funky soul-jazz. In fact, the results often sound like a late-1960s Blue Note album. The individual selections are not all that memorable or inspiring (it is doubtful that any of these Beck tunes will catch on in jazz), but Smith and his bandmates play quite well and deserve credit for trying to come up with fresh material for their grooves. – Scott Yanow
