I'm not sure why the reviews for this were so bad - I really enjoyed almost all of these songs. I for one think it's a treat these even made it to digital recording, so I wouldn't spend my time crying over the fact that the songs haven't been remastered to the best fidelity. There are more than a few gems that make this a worthwhile buy.
I can't defend this compilation - but there are at least two songs that are well master original recordings of great songs - Sam & Dave's "I thank you" and Ray Charles "What'd I say".
this ain't northern soul either, please employ someone who knows whats what to compile soul albums. This stuff is pathetic
"Songs that inspired Amy Winehouse". How the F did Elton John's cover of "Signed Sealed Delivered" from when he was studio musician inspire Amy Winehouse?? Or Billy Preston's ice skating rink cover of "Eight Days A Week"? For a change a release from the Stardust/Orchard label (all of their albums should have someone giving you the finger on the cover) is mostly originals. Kinda crappy sounding like they taped them off the radio originals...but originals.
Re-recordings can be dreadful. Check out Soul Sister Brown Sugar - Yuk!
