Well Worth a Download

SenatorB

The Cold Nose is completely different from In Ear Park, but just as good. It's more reminiscent of a GBV-style low fi version of post Kid A Radiohead, and stylistically is all over the map. Lots of instrumentals and loops, but it's all fascinating. And "Family Romance" is a great Beatle-esque anthem, equal parts "Don't Let Me Down" and the ending of Hey Jude.

Incredibly good

I haven't downloaded an album I like so much in quite a while, so strange and peculiar...Just how we like it :) I think in some ways Department of Eagles are more interesting than Grizzly Bear (Who are still really, really amazing.) I'm too tired to ensure whether or not my little review makes sense or not but I can assure you that this is an excellent album if you're a fan of this genre.

Excellent debut reissued

Great music that mixes Grizzly Bear type asthetics with electronic pop. "Forty Dollar Rug" is my personal favorite track and one of the funniest songs I've heard in a very long time. This album is worthy of your downloads.

Tasty Ear Candy!

First of all, Fred and Daniel (Department of Eagles) are really nice guys. I e-mailed them to tell them how much I loved this album and they wrote back and were really appreciative. But that's just it-- I love this album so much I had to write to tell them so! There is a lot going on throughout each of the tracks, and no two sound quite the same although you can really hear how they all go together. You can also tell that they had a lot of fun with sounds and used so many different instruments to express and evoke thought and observation. "Forty Dollar Rug" came up on my iPod and my friend looked at me questioningly but was hooked on Department of Eagles immediately.

don't think there's a throwaway here. literate, engaging & playful without cleveritis. think icu meets the eclectosphere with real musicianship, artistry & the rarest of rarities, heartfelt parody. they can rock too but just don't pour it on.

A Find

This band has range, electropop a al Thom Yorke, clouDEAD-ish HipHop, sample based soundscapes. Lots of fun - great for the summer.

Atmospheric, smooth, and utterly lovable. Necessary listening.

They Say All Music Guide

An expanded edition of an album initially released in 2005, The Cold Nose is a highly enjoyable, occasionally incredibly goofy tapestry of sample-heavy downtempo instrumentals, quirky electronic pop songs, and giggly pisstakes like “Forty Dollar Rug” (an apparent dig at the Streets, based on the affected mockney accent) and the De La Soul-like hip-hop lark “Family Romance.” Like some kind of stoned jam session between DJ Shadow, the Magnetic Fields, Portishead, and R. Stevie Moore (whose own predilection for strange monologues in silly tape-manipulated vocals is evoked — probably unknowingly — on the whacked-out bonus track “Dinner for Two”), The Cold Nose makes its own sort of idiosyncratic sense after a few listens — possibly fewer if listened to under the same altered states it appears to have been recorded in. – Stewart Mason
