One of the most interesting figures in Ghana's pop history is John Collins, a white British expat who established the Bokoor ("Cool") Band in the '70s with local musicians, and later established Bokoor Recording Studios, where he recorded hundreds of Ghanaian bands. This collection combines eight excellent tracks by the Bokoor Band (especially "Yeah Yeah Ku Yeah," a juiced-up, crunchy variation on the rhythm of the J.B.'s '"Hot Pants Road") with four more recent recordings by Ghanaian highlife groups like T.O. Jazz. Collins is a harmonica player as well as a guitarist; even though harmonica's not an instrument you hear in a lot of African pop, it was the Bokoor Band's signature sound, and it turns out to be a surprisingly great element for dance music, a grittier equivalent of the horns favored by other African groove bands of the time.
