good stuff.

I find myself struggling with the singer/songwriter genre. Too much navel-gazing and not enough hooks to keep me interested. On Second Hand, Mark Heard took us through quite a bit of frustration, while giving us some memorable melodies (and an excellent Beatles cover).

Great Album

by a gifted singer songwriter. that left us far to soon. I don't consider this a christian album as much as I consider it an album by an artist who happens to be a Christian. Very good stuff!

Some Dittos

Correct about the corrupted tracks. Look on the "Strong Hand of Love" Tribute (by Various Artists on eMusic) for a great cover of "Look over your shoulder". Some other great covers on there and on "Orphans of God" tribute album. Ditto also on the "Don't worry about the Christian Thing". Most of Mark's career was in the "Christian" genre -- but his later stuff broke out of that. Spiritual overtones, for sure, but nothing overt or sappy. He truly was among the great singer-songwriters -- a man ahead of his time.

Same Problem: Corrupted Files

sjsimmons68

I had the same problem as previous reviewer. I'd give the album 5 stars if I could actually download the whole thing--three files are truncated.

Corrupted files

TheGun

Good stuff, but three files are corrupted (truncated). And, yes, I downloaded them a second time with the same result. As I recall, they are "Look Over Your Shoulder," "She Don't Have a Clue," and "It's Not Your Fault."

non-believers relax, this isn't an overtly xtian album at all - merely, one of the finest discs that ANY singer songwriter produced during the 90s. both of his albums - hard to find, but well worth it - are true gems. heartily recommended to anyone who likes Neil Young, The Band, Steve Young, Steve Forbert, Steve Earle...

Tribute from the other team.

I am not a Christian. Pretty much against it. But Mark Heard knew something more than most men. His music is amongst the best ever made, and I hope his religion doesn't throw people. This was one of the greats, people, and I hope rock history recognizes his talent and what he had to say to all of us regardless of our beliefs. Mark transcended.

They Say All Music Guide

More subdued than on his zydeco-influenced Dry Bones Dance, Mark Heard returns with an acoustic record. The focus here is on the lyrics, which fall on the ear like music itself. The album is pure poetry from start to finish, with lines like “You see me like a prism sees a candle.” The passionate outcry on “I Just Wanna Get Warm” turns into a real outcry at the end of the tune, backed by fiddle and guitar. “Nod Over Coffee” lyrically works like a string of striking images about the mundaneness of activity. “It’s Not Your Fault” displays a passionate plea for forgiveness after an apparent explosive outburst toward a loved one. From beginning to end, this record shines light on the self and the human condition with intelligent, well-crafted songs. The Beatles cover “I’m Looking Through You” is perhaps the weakest track. The nice use of Chapman Stick player Fergus Jemison Marsh on an acoustic release complements, rather than detracts from, the acoustic nature of this record. – Mark W.B. Allender
