Various Artists – Comedy Central, Comedy Death Ray
Label: Comedy Central Records

Featuring the talents of today's hottest stand-up comedians (David Cross, Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn to name just a few), Comedy Death Ray has built a reputation as one of LA's best comedy nights. (Every Tuesday at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, if you're in the area.) All three comics feature here on this collection of two separate recordings of CDR nights, along with Reno 911 (teaching kids how to spell by singing an easy mnemonic for M-E-T-H-A-M-P-H-E-T-A-M-I-N-E-S), Nick Thune (who relates the worst time to get stopped by a homeless person) and Chris Hardwick (of MTV's Singled Out fame). For a taste of the indie version of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, you need look no further than this.

Some great stuff on here

Milligan-man

Yes, some of the material here can be found elsewhere, but these performances are in some cases better than the alternative recordings. Especially true for Maria Bamford's track. Also enjoy Patton Oswalt, Todd Glass, and some totally new David Cross stuff. Check it out.

Mostly Delivers

Allegory

For the most part, this album delivers some seriously funny material. There are a lot of high points and for the most part, the low points are still pretty funny. The only notable exceptions are the tracks by Jimmy Pardo and Neil Hamburger. Both of these tracks are bad; really bad...like, make you want to hit the guy telling the "jokes" with a frying pan so that he'll never torture another audience with his brand of "comedy" bad. They're bad. Don't let two painful tracks stop you from getting this release, though. The funny stuff makes up for the bad stuff by a long shot.

Incredible comedy compilation

DevilsMischief

Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford, Neil Hamburger...these are all comedians I love, so when I stumbled across this double CD in the stores I knew I had to get it. The other comedians though were all incredibly funny (except for the second to last one, where the dialog has absolutely no subject yet you hear the audience roaring -- very weird!). The disc starts off with Paul Thompkins, who you might remember from Mr. Show. I run a weekly comedy/novelty show and I'm always on the lookout for comedians who aren't hacks. Needless to say this disc will be in heavy rotation. If you already like some of the names on here, you'll love the rest.

They Say All Music Guide

A simple audio rip of his 2007 HBO special, George Lopez’s America’s Mexican finds the comedian relaxed, loose, and free to drop more Spanglish than usual. Even if this might be off-putting to some of his non-Latino fans, a non-crossover and non-family friendly Lopez is a joy to behold, especially for the large Spanglish-friendly audience whose hysterical laughter is captured here. When he drops slang, it’s warmly received, causing him to be more interactive and at ease with his audience than he has been previously. This Latino who declares himself “old school” freely wanders through his stories of a poor childhood, stern parents, and times when simple pleasures were the best even though no one appreciated it. After all, drinking out of a hose still tasted like hose as Lopez points out and chasing down and then torturing house flies was all fun and games until Pops came around and pointed out how foolish you looked, perhaps with a rolled-up newspaper to the head. Disappointment with family extends to a grandma who has an extremely foul mouth, a tradition Lopez shares, something that might make fans of his more wholesome television show recoil in horror (and they probably won’t care for all the fart and diarrhea jokes either). This George Lopez goes to church with the stamp from the previous night’s nightclub on his hand and shows his appreciation for women’s bodies in the crudest manner possible. If that makes him sound like a jerk, his attitude that life is hard but still worth celebrating comes through loud and clear, bringing some charm to this edgy set. Other hot topics include Erik Estrada, immigration, and Britney Spears’ private parts, all covered in a bawdy, adult manner that just wouldn’t be as funny if Lopez was still playing by family television’s rules. – David Jeffries
