Das Kammer-Lied!
This is not your ordinary Das Lied von der Erde: it is an arrangement for chamber orchestra left unfinished by Arnold Schoenberg, which was eventually completed in 1980 by Rainer Riehn.Instead of the large orchestra of the original work, this version uses only wind and string quintets, in addition to a piano, a celesta and a harmonium. Having said that, the results are totally convincing, because the work gains in clarity, and the balance between soloist and instruments is improved. Herreweghe, who is known for his exceptional recordings of Bach's great works, aided by the "Ensemble Musique Oblique" and two superb soloists(the alto is astonishing!) do a splendid job here. No matter how many symphonic versions you own, this one is a must!
