The Jones Street Boys, Overcome
2007 | Label: Smith Street/Wrong Records / The Orchard

Nope, these Jones Street Boys aren't the Bensonhurst bruisers from The Warriors. These Jones Street Boys are Midwest-born, Brooklyn-dwelling bluegrass aficionados, who infuse their debut album with a DIY spirit. Just listen to the rollicking piano and vocals that run through "Last Time." Here — and when the group is at its best — they seem to excel in using tradition as a jumping-off point along the way to greener, more raucous pastures. The Boys crucially also know when to slow it down, as well. "Twilight," "Oh Night" and "Tall Buildings" are all weary laments that shine despite their subject matter.

Six stars, easy

Hotter than the sport peppers on a Maxwell Street Polish! Incredible songwriting for a rookie effort, but these studio bloodhounds also stir it up on stage... Have a taste of Julia Belle or Argentina and tell me you disagree

Love this album. Be sure to crank River Wide. My favorite.
