Introduction to Don Giovanni
I like this version, with it being a tie for the best (next to the Teatro alla Scala under Ricardo Muti). It's accessible, and easy to follow--I have this on CD box set (sadly, not SACD) and played it all the way home from work (1 hour drive at that time) and didn't tire from it one bit. Controversy surrounds this version, as Jacobs adds macabre to his rendering of Don, a master casanova (or in contemporary times, a player). Jacobs allows the listener to see the dark side of seduction; something of a taboo-like conjecture in many artistic circles. This is Don Giovanni for the common man. I recommend it for new listeners to this work, those with many versions of this work, and audiophiles---each will enjoy.
