Wonderful cover music, including the best cover of "Toxic" I could ever imagine. This doesn't strike me as Muzak in any sense. It's way more fun, not the lulling stuff they play in shops. Each song beautifully maintains the character and fun of the original pop song, but the orchestral elements make the whole works lovely. This was a great download!

What can be better than a Ramsey Lewis styled cover of Outkast's Hey Ya! (Especially for those tired of hearing the original.) Also offers covers of Missy Elliot, Badly Drawn Boy, Amy Winehouse, Amerie, Kelis and more. All have a much different flavor than the originals some barely recognizable but also superior in their own way. This one blurs the genre lines ping ponging from jazzy to electronic to rock.
This Ping Pong Orchestra lp is the best album I've heard this autumn! Imagine if James Taylor (the organizer) was touring with the Funk Brothers as a backing band. A bit like Mark Ronson but more '70s and with extra gratings of cheesy hammond organ. It's like one of those brilliant covers LPs you'd find in a charity shop. His versions of By The Way, Toxic Hey Ya! and Rehab stand out like golden thumbs.
Cover band, cheap copy tricks, muzak....not applicable. Shawn Lee already had proven before this that he creates funky uplifting songs, now the Ping Pong Orchestra shows some guts by doing the same thing that most people hate when done by others. The Orchestra is the exception, great tracks, original flow and added spice and funk to those songs you knew!
This isn't muzak at all. It's vibrant and funky instrumentals with a tip of the hat to The Ventures, Quantic, Funkadelic, Dennis Coffey, blaxsploitation, and them cool Italian film sountracks that have been popping up in compilations. There are hints of easy-listening, but they are the good kind.
I don't usually write reviews for albums, as I prefer to read others so I know what NOT to waste my downloads on. However, I'm going to go ahead and tell you that Shawn Lee has created a pretty sweet album here if you like kitsch. There will be those of you who listen to the samples and think that this is no different from the muzak version of these songs you'd here in a bad department store. While this may be true, tell me who's going to cover Britney Spears "Toxic" or the Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood" with the same panache that Shawn Lee has. Also, if you like Shawn Lee, check out his soundtrack to the video game Bully - also available on eMusic.
