Rap duo soldiers on without their longtime producer.
2007 | Label: ABB Records / IODA

When word started circulating in early 2007 that 9th Wonder would not be producing the next Little Brother album, the underground hand-wringing began. Panicky blog notices were tapped out by shaking hands. Frantic text messages rang out from Tulsa to Tokyo.

People, please. 9th simply chose to take a chill from his pals Big Pooh and Phonte. Or maybe they have broken up for good. So what? You never wanted to just take some time off from your boys?

And so, after all the drama, Pooh and Phonte (and, in one instance, 9th — who produces the excellent “Don't Go Breakin'My Heart”) return with their third full-length as Little Brother, GetBack. And it's damn good.

The pros: at only eleven tracks, it's lean and focused, with loads of relaxed, confident, honest rhymes about the struggles they face as rappers and as men with some self-effacing humor thrown in for good measure. Despite an almost complete absence of their former music maestro, the new crew — including Illmind (who lays down four of eleven), Khrysis, Rashid Hadee and Hi-Tek — doesn't even make you miss 9th that much. A soulful, warm glow permeates the proceedings and the talented MCs fall… read more »

THIS IS REAL HIP HOP!

carencarpenter

I am so sick of every backpacker douche bag talking about REAL HIP HOP. You can't read a review without some dork saying that its REAL or some crap. This is finally REAL! That other stuff was FAKE! The stuff I like is REAL! Other stuff is FAKE! I only listen Eric B. and Rakim! The only thing real is underdog hip hop! Get over yourselves. It's a great album, not an existential litmus test.

This album is mainstream Bull$*!# 9th Wonder is the greatest and little brother basicly dissed the underground when they went mainstrem.9th wonder is still underground and understands real hiphop music.

Saw them live.

I've been a fan since The Minstrel Show, but in no way is this a downgrade. Seem them live if you can, so incredibly worth it. Fonte is one funny bitch.

Get the Getback

This album is incredible. Just caught them live and these new joints translate so lovely on stage. Phonte and Big Pooh are not getting anywhere near the shine that they deserve. Hot joints - no filler.

Excellent!!!

I am an LB fan so I am partial. This is a really nice album. Quality ryhming and a nice variety of beats. 9th is missed to some extent but the variety in production adds to the strength on this album. (9th is featured on one song though, he gotta represent!!) LB for life!!!!

They Say All Media Guide

It should be an easy story to tell: vaunted rap group loses the producer who made them a quality act, then slowly sinks back into the underground, never to be heard from again. From Get Back, it’s clear that Little Brother didn’t mind the loss of 9th Wonder and decided to rewrite the script. Not only do Phonte and Pooh sound like nothing has changed, in point of fact they sound more energized and engaged than ever before. They’ve got more to say and more intriguing ways to say it, including touches like fronting a flashy production worthy of Bad Boy for the anti-materialist “Good Clothes,” inviting Lil Wayne for “Breakin My Heart” (where he reliably blows your mind with line after line, like “I don’t want a broken heart because I lose the pieces”), and floating an utterly hilarious exposé of late-night hook-ups (“After the Party”). Instead of the usual rap record circa 2007, where dozens of lines go by with no reason to pay particular attention besides technical ability, it’s difficult not to hang on every line here from Phonte and Pooh. And for those worried about the production quality with 9th Wonder’s departure, it may have actually improved with the work of Illmind and Khrysis, among others (9th Wonder appears once, on the Lil Wayne feature). It’s one of the most refreshing hip-hop records of 2007, one where you can rely on rappers to talk intelligently and rap fluidly about important subjects, know what to treat seriously and what to treat humorously, put up great productions, and really care about what they’re saying. – John Bush
