Modeselektor, Happy Birthday!
2007 | Label: BPitch Control / Finetunes

More than just an album on which Thom Yorke appears (though the presence of the guy who's supposed to be fronting Radiohead is not exactly insignificant), Happy Birthday! is a pleasingly messy and chaotic collection of songs by a duo from the goofier outer reaches of Berlin's techno scene. Modeselektor make sounds suited for dance clubs — check the dark, refracted beats of “B.M.I.” and the pre-peak primer slathered over “Godspeed” — but more often… read more »

it's a party

I heard of this because of Thom Yorke but downloaded it and it's much more. I have officially replaced traditional "happy birthday" song with this one for my birthday. Listening straight through it can be disjointed, but no matter what song comes up when I'm shufflin' it's just right.

the track listings here don't match some of the official Happy Birthday! release listings. For ex look it up on Discogs. It looks like this includes some vinyl only cuts as well? not sure. that being said, it is an interesting eclectic mix of styles. and it's high quality impressive stuff, but i also didn't feel compelled to listen to it more than once. hmmmmm...

stunning record

bleego

This album is just straight awesome. The songs have a perfect sense of dance floor timing, yet are wonderfully creative with their use of bass, compression and texture. Quite a bit of genre variety too, and most of the songs are extremely memorable. While indeed a few songs could have been left out, I can't think of any egregious failures here and outside of maybe the short noodly pieces, all are worth a download.

Pick and choose. Find perfection.

Invisiblecity

Déboutonner: Interesting, dense, mezmerizing. Perfect.

samples suck

alis.pasha

Why doesn't Emusic play samples from the middle of the track instead of the first few seconds off the beginning? This is dumb. Other mp3 sites will feature the middle parts of tracks.

Interesting and Fun

To me they sound a bit like Autechre. The difference is that the music on this album isn't quite as mental, and actually goes somewhere, so hopefully it won't be used in any movie soundtracks anytime soon. Don't get me wrong. I do love Autechre (check them out is you haven't heard of it), Just not all the time. I didn't think any of the songs were like 'nails on a chalkboard', but I can't listen to all of them while I'm driving either. Since there is 75 mins of music, I don't need to.

I like some of what I hear

but just because a CD can hold 75 minutes doesn't mean you have to use them all. Playful and eclectic. I downloaded parts but I think rapping with techno is so over done. With the exception of Yorke's song, the vocals and rapping were nails on a chalkboard.

The First Rebirth

nwsolo

Stellar night light but after "First Rebirth" the remaining rockets failed to obtain orbit. But then, I like eating raw food so what do I know?
