In the tradition of Robyn Hitchcock, Elvis Costello, and Sam Phillips, Paula Carino is a songwriter whose witty and poetic lyrics enhance, not dominate, the hooky melodies. This power-pop/indie rock gem was overlooked on its original release. Let's hope the 2007 re-release garners the attention it deserves.
"Aquacade" offers a mix of upbeat indie pop ("Venus Records" is a highlight) and sparely arranged songs that mostly feature Carino's voice and acoustic guitar. The common denominators are Carino's witty lyrics, which are often emotionally incisive even when hiding in metaphor and clever wordplay, and her hum-along melodies. The production values are agreeably lo-fi. Especially recommended for fans of Barbara Manning .
