A comprehensive survey of the state of greasy, trashy rock & roll.
2007 | Label: Norton Records / The Orchard

For close to two decades, NYC's Norton Records has played a key role in rescuing the distinctly American artform of greasy, trashy rock from extinction. I Hate CDs is a 3-CD set (I know, I know) culled from forty-five 45s put out by the label. It features artists that span the decades, from yesteryear up to today; it also serves as a comprehensive document of what this label — and this music — are all about.

The Dictators '”Who Will Save Rock and Roll?” opens the collection; it's a new song from an old-time trashy punk band, and it serves as a great rallying cry for the collection. Norton flagship artist, one-man-band Hasil Adkins (possibly the only artist ever to have a compilation record that consists solely of songs with the word “chicken” in the title) is represented (natch) with “Chicken Shake,” a song brimming with the no-fi Jerry Lee Lewis vibe that defines his work. Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill house band the 5.6.7.8s re-invents “Harlem Shuffle” as an organ-driven go-go swirl. “Are You For Real” proves that Question Mark and the Mysterians were good for much more than “96 Tears,” and “Jungle Stomp” by … read more »

If Hell had an AM station, this is the music the Devil would play on his air shift. Simply great stuff here that offers raw, unvarnished rock & roll that's not afraid to show it's blues and country origins while pointing toward a punk future. Guess where my month's D/L's just went?

this is the real deal, like the man said, this is the music we were warned about. As a Gaz's Rockin Blues & Cramps fan, this set is chock full of crazy tunes. I've just downloaded about 2 thirds of it and I am loving it!

I Love 45's

mrush

I hate to ask the obvious question of the two reviewers who had a problem with the "old" sound, but... if you were looking for shiny, polished production quality, why throw your chips in for a compilation of 45's called, "I Hate CD's"? If you really do hate CD's, then you'll love this--it's the Popeye of music--it is what it is.

I Love "I Hate ..."

Robotclaw

This is the devil’s music, the evil jungle sounds the preachers and the White Citizens’ Council originally warned us about — dangerous-sounding stuff that leads to juvenile delinquency, sex, miscegenation, and eventually to an eternity in hell. Much of the material is from the ’50s and ’60s, but it’s far too unrefined for oldies radio. Not that its lyrics are obscene; most of the artists here don’t need to use dirty words to sound outright filthy. Where did they record this...in a closet?? Sorry, can't handle the "muddy sound quality". Best to move on...unless there's something here you might consider classic?!?!?!?!
