Alec Ounsworth and co. emerge from Some Loud Thunder with confidence intact.
2007 | Label: Lolla Records / IODA

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah had something to prove when they hit the live circuit in 2007. Their self-released, self-titled debut made them underground darlings in 2005, but their less instantly winning follow-up, 2007's Some Loud Thunder left some fans scratching their heads. This recording, from Clap Your Hands 'tour-ending Lollapalooza appearance finds them emerging from the experience with confidence intact.

Drawing democratically from both of the band's albums, Live At Lollapalooza 2007 emphasizes the biting, rhythmic guitar lines that dominated Thunder, an approach that improves in a live setting. The Thunder tracks punch through in a way they never quite managed on the album and the songs from the debut album benefit from being allowed to stretch out. The only drawback: While singer Alec Ounsworth sheds some of the David Byrne-isms that led some to dub him a copycat, he occasionally picks up some new, unpleasantly trilly tics. The crowd of hardened fans and drunken festivalgoers don't seem to mind, though, and the set suggests the band will continue to make interesting noise for a while.

eMusic Selects: Yellow Ostrich

By Laura Leebove, Production Editor

File Under: Frenzied guitar riffs, looped vocals and floor-tom grooves Alex Schaaf started Yellow Ostrich as a dorm-room solo outing while in college in Wisconsin, where he cranked out a couple of whimsical electropop albums and EPs made mostly with just a drum machine and vocals. He doesn't like to spend much time on one project: Those first releases — among them an EP inspired by Morgan Freeman's Wikipedia page — were each made in just… more »

eMusic Yearbook: 2005

By Chuck Eddy, eMusic Contributor

Indie-rock in the '00s was hardly the same animal as indie-rock two decades before, and much of the blame should probably go to Nirvana. In the '80s, labels like SST and Touch & Go were built on testosterone. But when grunge went multiplatinum in the '90s, rock bands brandishing palpable physicality suddenly qualified as mainstream again, and the bigger indies started adopting a more effete and introverted aesthetic. So if you skim down a list… more »
