The Playing Favorites play radio-ready modern-rock/emo from Los Angeles reminiscent of Superdrag and their power-pop brethren, cheery songs tinted with anguished lyrics and vocals that break through the veneer sheen. There's hardly anything new here, but fans of competent pop will find plenty to glom onto.

Imagine Lagwagon and Summercamp touring in 1998. They crash, get amnesia, and forget who is in which band. This is the band and album that would result. Not as punk as Lagwagon and not as catchy as Summercamp. Still, it's a good summer record.
