important*

mattyboyfloyd

* these lads fancied themselves as pretty important back in the day, as did gullible hipster-style people. saw them a few times. at the knitting factory two or three times. in someone's apartment in new brunswick, nj , where they were a bunch of cun... i mean jerks... to their hosts because they wanted falafel instead of whatever the people whose loft it was made especially to meet their special, sensitive dietary needs. they were tortured individuals according to them. at one of the shows i was at, one of them held up a picture of his child who was presumably kidnapped by his/her not-on-tour-all-the-time-mother as though he (the band member) was a human milk carton and the child was genuinely missing. and as though he (the band member) and some audience members might wander the streets of tribeca to find said child (after they shot up of course). that was soooooo funny!! not much music to back up the pretentious swagger. i'm sure you'll like it though.

Overrated?

I can't help but think that this is one of those bands that is loved more for what they could have been then for what they actually were. The Walkmen have their flaws but at least they are sonicaly interesting which is more than you can say for Jonathan Fire Eater.

Better than anything I've heard from The Walkmen

FurryVarmint

Three members of this band went on to The Walkmen. The material here is far better, imho.

oh, it's so good to see that other people have heard of jonathan fire*eater. they have always been a highly underrated band, in my opinion.

Awesome

ArmondoMfume

I used a song off of here for a film school project...good album, maybe even a little ahead of it's time. Check out "No Love Like That," that was the single...

Currently The Walkmen...

harpshi

Several members of this band are currently in the Walkmen. JFE were active back in the 90's, one of the early garage rock revival bands kicking around NYC. Great stuff!

DreamWorks actually courted Jonathan Fire*Eater, which is bizarre — no matter how photogenic the quintet is, their music is simply not meant for the mainstream. Fortunately, the band’s sound isn’t drastically cleaned up on their major-label debut, Wolf Songs for Lambs, but that doesn’t mean that the record is the powerhouse it could have been. The production is somewhat muted, meaning that the band never tears into the songs like they do in concert, but that turns out to be a minor complaint, because Jonathan Fire*Eater has such an individual, idiosyncratic sound that even weak moments sound kinetic. Through most of Wolf Songs for Lambs, the group comes across as a hybrid of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Pavement and the Make-Up — they have the twisted, unpredictable songstructures of Malkmus’ crew, the hipster blues of Spencer and the revolutionary zeal of the Make-Up — and while the songwriting is uneven, the record still shows more style, substance and originality than most post-alternative guitar combos. It may not find Jonathan Fire*Eater fulfilling their potential, but Wolf Songs for Lambs remains a strong debut. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
