Kristeen Young, X
2004 | Label: Tony Visconti Productions / IODA

Kristeen Young is a clear descendant of the Kate Bush/Tori Amos school of piano-based singer-songwriting: confrontational lyrics, askew melodies, songs that go green when you think they will go right. Unlike Bush and Amos, however, Young's music has a decidedly harder edge, her songs at times verging on industrial with their pounding keyboards and heavily programmed drum tracks. That is not every song by any means, though: others are simply hard, literate rock with Young's versatile, strong voice striding in the foreground, her vocal presence at once invigorating and challenging. The first track, "No Other God," is easily the most difficult song on the record; the rest are far more enjoyable and welcoming, so don't judge solely by that beginning.

Great free download! Thank you!

"No Other God" was a fine choice for a freebie. It did exactly what a free download should do (not like that famous iWebsite which just insults you by giving away garbage, junk, and dreck week after week), to bring interest to a deserving under-recognized performer and inspire additional purchases. I downloaded a number of her other songs as a result. A feral Tori Amos is a great way to describe her. Also utilizing spiky high register vocals and piano, she has what I always thought Ms. Amos lacked, a hard edge. These songs are quirky and intelligent like Amos, and rock, too. Her look and vocals also make me think she's channelling Lene Lovich. I highly recommend Kristeen Young, wish her great success, and very much anticipate hearing much more from this unique artist in the future. Thank you, eMusic, for making me aware of her distinctive and satisfying body of work.
