Typical Russian opulence, in choral form
Label: Chandos

Not many Russian composers have devoted themselves to the voice, but the best-remembered works of Alexander Grechaninov (1864-1956) are his choral works. His 1911 cycle of 12 devotional Easter-season motets for unaccompanied choir, Passion Week, should appeal to any fan of vocal music, combining the spaciousness and otherworldly serenity of medieval chant with luscious Romantic harmonies. Charles Bruffy leads sonorous and heartfelt performances by the Kansas City Chorale and the Phoenix Bach Choir.

If you haven't had the opportunity to stand in a Russian Orthodox church in the middle of Russia, you're in luck because this CD captures the entire experience. This is a wonderful collection.
