Still sweeter than rock candy and larger than life, after all these years.
Label: Dolly Records / INgrooves

Don't be shocked if the statement-of-purpose title track of Dolly Parton's Backwoods Barbie winds up an instant karaoke classic for drag queens who opt to hear “backwoods” as “backwards.” We shouldn't judge her by all her hair and makeup, Dolly tells us, because “the way I look is just a county gal's idea of glam.”

That's only the best joke on this impressively well-crafted collection, a self-released free-agent move billed as the ageless icon's first pop-country album in ages. Second best joke, maybe: “I'm not the Dalai Lama” (get it?) as part of a positive-mental-attitude lesson for overweight and/or underpaid girlfriends. The Fine Young Cannibals cover, unabashedly new-wave-synthed until its hoedown finale, is cute too. As is the punchline of Dolly's joyfully un-obscene back-atcha to a conceited Mr. Big Stuff who “don't know love from Shinola”: “you'll be [beep!] out of luck.”

Dolly's “Tracks of My Tears” rivals Ronstadt's if not Robinson's, and her “pop-country” here is mostly the stuff of ’70s d-i-v-o-r-c-e laments, from the brittle tearjerker “Made of Stone” to songs connecting fragrant flowers and fragrant makeup with breakups. There's also relaxed jazz-piano Western Swing, an artsily psychedelic thrum undulating between Appalachia and the Middle East and uplifting gospel-pop about… read more »

Lovely

A solid half of the albums songs fall into the classic country-music category of heartbreak songs, one way or another: divorce songs, cheating tales, lonely-night confessions. Yet theres no danger that these songs on similar topics will blur together, because each takes its own approach.

Dolly Parton is a great, iconic American artist who lives beyond mere appearances. Otherwise, she would not be famous for saying, "You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap!" I love most of the tracks on this album. God bless Dolly and may her headlights shine brightly for a long time.

I am not allowed to program 3 hours of Emily Haines, so I decided to stretch out and include all of the female artists I love that we have on the site. I think I was pretty thorough, but I did sneak in Emily on a Broken Social Scene track, a track from a solo EP, AND a Metric cut, albeit a vintage one. Beyonce and Dolly are in the mix - take a listen! more »

They Say All Media Guide

It’s been three years since Dolly Parton released a new album, and nearly two decades since she put out anything close to a mainstream country offering, so Backwoods Barbie ought to get some serious media attention, although it remains to be seen whether the now 62-year-old Parton will get much play on the new country stations. The first single from the album, the cloyingly wise “Better Get to Livin’,” is certainly catchy enough, but the fact remains that Parton’s voice isn’t quite what it used to be and she wasn’t exactly Patsy Cline in the first place. What she is, and has been all these years, is a true iconic presence in country music, a shrewd marketer, an astute businesswoman (Backwoods Barbie appears from her own Dolly Records), and a frequently brilliant if understated songwriter (nine of the 12 tracks here are Parton originals). Unlike her last couple of albums, which were bluegrass-based, she isn’t trying to reinvent herself here, but works in her usual pop and country hybrid style (even tenderly covering Smokey Robinson’s “The Tracks of My Tears”), not trying too hard to be contemporary, although the production touches are there (the album was co-produced by Parton and her bandleader, guitarist Kent Wells), certainly, and her version of Betsy Ulmer and Craig Wiseman’s “Jesus & Gravity,” even more than “Better Get to Livin’,” could well find itself in regular rotation on new country radio stations, at least in a fair and equitable world. Other highlights here include the title song, which shows Parton still in tune with her public image (she really always has been, of course), and the beautiful and delicate original “Only Dreamin’,” which shows that, beneath all the big wigs and glamour, Parton is still a fine songwriter with an uncommon sense of grace, economy, and wisdom. Backwoods Barbie might not break the bank out there, and it would take a good deal of marketing and luck for any of these tracks to hit the top of the new country charts, but it shows that Parton can still deliver the package in fine style and only the fools among us would ever count her down and out, no matter how many bluegrass albums she does. – Steve Leggett
