Something Special

Gypsy1

Found this by accident and I am astounded that Jan Johansson isn't better known. This is an incredible piece of jazz history-- and it makes great listening, too.

One of the best ever made

jansandred

Jazz på Svenska is probably one of the best jazz albums ever made. Unbeatable.

Style-breaking ever-lasting epic

Suigreterra

This is Jan Johansson's greatest musical achievement - it will stand up to any comparison. With this album he created a new style of jazz, which never really continued to evolve, as nobody managed to live up to his seminal work.

A Cold Winter Night?

jazzmine

Take out a bottle of white wine, a plate of lutefisk, and turn on Jazz Pa Svenska next to warm fire's glow.

A Lost Classic

MisterMB

Before his life was cut short, pianist Jan Johansson recorded a series of records examining folk music in chamber-jazz settings. The ethereal, semi-classical sounds on this record anticipate the 1970s ECM aesthetic, and Johansson's inimitable style is demonstrated flawlessly throughout the collection of Swedish melodies. I believe this to be one of the great jazz albums, and can't recommend it highly enough.
