Controversy - A Tribute

Just because the Purple One does it best, it doesn’t mean other artists can’t give his songs a shot. Controversy: A Tribute to Prince takes 12 Prince songs, everything from “Purple Rain” to a dub version of “Sign ‘O’ the Times,” unfortunately called “Sine of the Dub,” from 12 different artists (the most famous one probably being D’Angelo, who does a pretty decent cover of “She Is Always in My Hair”) to varying degrees of success. There are definitely some weak points here — the overly dramatic “Condition of the Heart,” the reggae take of “Girls and Boys” — and none ever come close to surpassing the original, making the compilation more of a novelty, albeit an entertaining novelty, than anything else. – Marisa Brown
