Son Lux, At War With Walls and Mazes
2008 | Label: anticon / IODA

Son Lux (real name: Ryan Lott) sounds right at home among his labelmates and avant rap upstarts at anticon records. His debut full length, At War With Walls and Mazes, is a genre mish-mash showcasing Lott's chops as a classically trained composer: he raps and warbles over dour dirges that feature stuttering drum machines, fuzzed-out guitar, over-reverbed piano and a slew of other processed sounds. It's simultaneously engaging and hypnotic, with standouts being the twinkling brokenbeat of single "Break" and the dark, layered trudge of "Stay."

amazing

To me, this has been one of the greatest finds in many years. This music is sophisticated, rhythmically challenging, ethereal, melodious, at times moving. Friends who heard it loved it too. "Break" is amazing--first the power of the stunning rhythm intro (one of the best in any song in 30 years), followed by the gorgeous melody. "Betray" is beautiful and sweet. "War" is contemplative and touching. Listen to this.

For the right mood

trevhutch

I enjoy the sonic layers and experimentation on this: It really does take your mind to another place. However I find it difficult to look past the repetitive vocal phrases. Probably not for everyone.

better with female vocals

jvans3777

The sound seems to be more idealistic and hence a bit mashed up and chaotic, if you are a fan of noise you will probably like this album, may be good for a mood I havent experienced yet. Down with pop music!!!

A beautiful find

logic1000

Expect organic, yet otherwordly layers of sound. This is digested best as a whole, but the trilogy of tracks 7-9 has become my favorite. This is an important and accessible album that I would recommend for anyone looking for a musical journey.

Grows and grows

Luddite

Put simply, i used to hate radiohead, despise them, and one day they just clicked like equations ya know. check it out, and force yourself to love it like i do, then you'll realise no other voice would have worked

Youngest and Blandest

blackdevildiscohodgins

The fact that he is the youngest of three children is irrelevant. This album is at first boring then irritating. There is so much gold out there, we sometimes need a hand sorting through the trash

Sometimes...

... you are lucky enough to hear just exactly the music that best scratches that itch for you. For me, that's been Son Lux, which I've been playing more or less constantly since I first downloaded it a couple weeks ago. Start with "Weapons," "Stand," or "Break" and see if you don't agree. (Every track on here is a keeper, though.) Lushly layered, melodic, unique, and utterly addictive, this is hands down one of my favorite albums this year.

"Put down all your weapons"

goodness.of.fit

From the opening lines in Prologue this album grabs you and does not let go. I am not generally a fan of "electronic" music but this has a very organic feel and the mood created and woven throughout the album is really good. May be the best album of 2008.

Great write up in London's 'the Guardian'

searles.mike

As a decidedly non-secular listener, a lot of the religious motifs seemed like window dressing until I read this pretty incisive article. Nice one. http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,,2277147,00.html

Best song on the album by far. Best/fastest beats and lyrics to match.

My Dozen

By Bob Boilen, eMusic Contributor

In music, it's a sense of adventure I love the most. I like to put on a record and not quite know what's happening next. The first thing that happens when I get a new record and I put on the first cut, if there's too much predictability -- particularly in the lyrics -- than I often don't go to the second cut. It has to be something that, if it doesn't completely surprise me,… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Classically trained composer and pianist Ryan Lott takes the anticon-approved electronic route on At War with Walls & Mazes, which he performs under the name Son Lux. Combining samples with electronic and live instrumentation, Lott writes sad, lush music that never forgets its sense of composition and melody. The most interesting songs are those in which he plays with the mix, letting his vocals fall under the layers of strings and chopped bleeps — like in the lovely “Stand,” which erupts suddenly into female operatic vocals, drum rolls, and lots of piano while the line he’d been singing since the beginning (“You stand between my and all my enemies”) fades distantly away. Musically, although his pieces are more successful as background music than actual songs, Lott is certainly talented, and At War with Walls & Mazes is an ambitiously detailed and delicate album, although not entirely unique. – Marisa Brown
