Growing rule

dat808

Like a more peaceful Sunn0))). their studio albums capture what they're about much better, but if you don't get it, don't slag them off.

Einsturzende Frequency Range

BlackMetallic

This appears to be still freebie so check it out for yourself. I find the minimalism kind of intrigueing - I quite like the recurring theme of trains and transportation. It does have an "80's" overtone but more along the lines of Holger Czukay or even Einsturzende Neubaten. There is a definite 'groove' that percolates. It does make me want to hear what they would do in a full studio as the live quality does not provide much frequency range.

I was there

MorrisRumpkin

I was totally blown away by this show. The recordings don't capture what it's like to physically feel the music, as you can when seeing Growing live. Nice treat for free though.

Free for a reason.

Unbelievable crap. This is supposed to be "music?"

25 minutes of my life wasted

A real stinker - boring and annoying. Don't bother even if it's free.

Dragging me down

PascalBeatleHard

It's Dragging me down, dragging on forever, like being caught in a traffic-jam or hijacked...

Indulgence, anyone?

paulacoots

Yeah, it was free. And now it's deleted. I rarely write negative reviews and I listened to 90% of this. If their intention was to create annoying nothing then they succeeded. Look at my profile. I like noise. I like music. I like sounds! Hell, I am a guitarist who will make bat noises (but only on my guitar). Creativity and taking chances are what drives experimental music. This just drove me to write a bad review.

sounds like 80s industrial

noisician

listening to this, it really reminded me of that first Throbbing Gristle "CD1" which I got when it came out back in the 80s. the TG at least has some nostalgic appeal, but basically has not aged all that well. this is dated sounding and not especially interesting.

Am I suppose to have this?

mrbootle

It says I can download it... but ever time I try it tells me file not available. Is this a UK thing?

Ambiental electronical

Jay-Kay

If you like ambient electronica, definitely download this. Like a cross between Eno and BOB State but with a stronger rock sensibility. Thank you to Emusic for continuing to get us free music to expand our musical horizons.

They Say All Music Guide

Growing’s early-2008 effort was one of their shortest, less a full album than an EP of four good songs that collectively clock in at under half an hour. It’s a reasonable balance between inspirations and their own spark — thus, “First Contact” has the kind of sheer obsessive focus in its waves and loops of sound familiar from late Spacemen 3 efforts (or early Spectrum and Spiritualized), but the random guitar stabs that come in over the rhythm, reverbed and a little noodly in their own way, give the track its own clear identity. Similarly, the title track reverses what had become a standard model for electrogaze — a punchy, near-glitch beat cutting through a sonic wash — by placing the reverb on the beats itself instead. Meanwhile, “Swell” starts off the release on a perfectly named note, continuing to rise and develop in a propulsive motion that almost feels like a regal ascension. – Ned Raggett
