Colour Revolt, Plunder, Beg, and Curse
2008 | Label: Fat Possum Records

Songs lumber and lurch on Plunder, Beg & Curse, the superb full-length debut from Mississippi's Colour Revolt. Even the ballads — the slow, breathy, psychedelic ballads — have a kind of weight to them. This is heavy music, but not in a metallic sense: witness the scuzzed-up guitar that slices the center of "Naked & Red" or the boogie-rock noodling in the background of the aptly-named "Swamp." Colour Revolt shoot a kind of dread and ballast into their indie-rock, making each drum thwack and bass roll sound giant-sized.

Rock without the monotony

Mohawk

Stimulating, superb rock and roll. I especially like songs 1, 2, 6, 9, 10.

colour revolt here achieves that rare bullseye of producing something authentic and unique which is simultaneously so relatable that it feels familiar. you'll hear lyrical sophistication which includes both quotable axiomatic phrases and allusions that deeply resonate. i think the album really captures something true about the character of the heart and the common human experience in the melodies and rhythms as well as the words--kinda like an audible mandala. thanks c.r.!

Love Yall (especially Jimmy)

Colour Revolt is getting better and better. I believe now the band has officially arrived as a band that has something unique to offer. I've loved this album so much and am proud of the hometown heroes. Hope to see you soon in Jackson (mixtape matt). But though a national tour is a regular deal now, I say ENGLAND. Get yalls asses down to the UK! and rock the house.

Plunder, Beg, and Curse

A lot of "new" music (as if) from new artists leaves me cold: the music is different, yes, but lacks arrangement, melody, purpose - the music is different, but bad. There is a hipster self-consciousness with opinion and choices that ends up being forced and fake. The Colour Revolt record is so far beyond that scene. Plunder, Beg, and Curse is structured, rife with good melodies, and I see a real purpose with the record without any hipster self-consciousness. No one makes music like that record anymore - nonchalant rock swagger tempered with an artist's sensitivity. Effortless good taste and perfect choices that skip hipster and jump right into cool. The record doesn't ape anyone's style, but forges something that is inherently Colour Revolt.
