Laura Cantrell takes New Order, Burt Bacharach and Gordon Lightfoot to the country.
2008 | Label: Diesel Only Records / The Orchard

Laura Cantrell knows how to stay out of a song's way, and that willingness to let her pure twang serve the lyric at hand is in full, lustrous effect on Trains and Boats and Planes. As the title suggests, this amounts to a concept EP about, well, travel and transportation, recorded in sessions with a tossed-off, semi-impromptu feel, heavy on fiddle and accordion. Cantrell's way with country standards is no news, and here wrings stoic pathos from Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings," unlocks a swell yodel on Roger Miller's "Train of Life" and deadpans John Hartford's comic shuffle "Howard Hughes Blues," adding a new line about how Scorsese's The Aviator was too long.

But even better are her three major re-workings of familiar, non-country oldies. In her hands, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" sounds like the genuine lost folk traditional Gordon Lightfoot probably always wanted it to be, and New Order's "Love Vigilantes" (you know, the one that goes "I want to see/ My family/ My wife and child/ Waiting for me") is a war ballad with a happy ending. And as for the Bacharach-penned title track, it's been crying out for a country cover for years and we… read more »

What I was Waiting For

hawkofmayandy

I had only just signed on to e music and I could not believe it when I heard the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on here. I had heard it once by Gordon Lightfoot on the radio many years ago and it always haunted me. However I couldn't find the track (cheaply) as i really didnt want to buy a Gordon Lightfoot album ( sorry I think he's a bit easy listening) Imagine my joy at finding the track with some ooomph and life. FANTASTIC! From there I investigated the rest of the album and Laura's others and found an artist I really like!

"And as for the Bacharach-penned title track, it's been crying out for a country cover for years and we never even realized it." Which is why Dwight Yoakam covered it on Population Me. As for Laura, while she has great taste and a nice sound, her voice just doesn't cut it for me.

a stunner

Great, simple, stripped-down country music, perfectly adapted to Laura's evocative and understated voice. Three tracks are highlights, the kind of tunes you would have built mix-tapes around back in the day: title track, "Love Vigilantes," and "Silver Wings," but the whole thing is great. I'm Not a Country Fan

BusMan984

I'm Not a Country Fan, but the free track: "Trains and Boats and Planes" is only mildly country. I have enjoyed this song, and have decided to also download "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", the jury is still out on this one, since I really like Gordan Lightfoot's version, I'll have to give this one more "listens" to make a good evaluation.

Laura Cantrell is my hero!

Laura Cantrell has made another wonderful album. She is a perfect example of how someone of above-average talent can leverage every bit of it to maximum effect. For years I've watched artists with talent oozing out their pores crash and burn because they didn't have the skill or savvy to apply it properly. Cantrell runs rings around them employing intelligence and sincerity to everything she touches. Once again, Cantrell has chosen top notch material and put her own stamp upon it. The album takes a turn to a more modern (and somewhat less satisfying) sound for two tracks, but on the whole, the album holds together well. Download it now!
