Just Plain Good - Though Not Plain at All!

TikiMon

This is the stuff! REAL music with honest emotions no filler no gimmicks, infectious (in the best way!), groovin' and catchy as the day is long. Eli runs the gamut from Sam Cooke and Sam & Dave right on through to Otis Redding and even the Jameses (Elmore and Brown!!!) There's even a bit if Van the Man here. Eli and his band are WAY impressive! This guy's got it goin' ON!!! Magnificent.

More of today's soul revival

mr. mark

This is another good example of young singers, black or white, presenting a modern/retro soul sound. While not as funky as the Daptone greats, Reed works a variety of 60's-70's soul styles with authenticity. Don't hear any echoes of Motown here, though. Nice to see this sound being revived!

Hip Hop?

How does this get classified as Hip-Hop? This is most definitely Rhythm & Blues!

Gathering no moss...

Eli "Paperboy" Reed is following in the footsteps of many a young man who wants to play the blues. He hears from the masters (the Kings, Waters, Hooker, and others), he absorbs, and he makes the sound his own. Music buffs should figure out what group is alluded to in the review title as a little history reference.

That classic Motown sound

EMUSIC-00907EFE

You'll swear this is classic Motown and so will anyone you play it for. Reed can really belt out a song and is an equal match for the solid horn section that's backing him. It's a great disc all the way through.

Like a musical time machine

TangerineLemming

This guy was born in the wrong era. He so perfectly channels the passion of soul music that this album is like stepping back in time. This stuff is a blast...from the past.

Abum of the year

TINSHACK

Sweet summer soul Batman I downloaded this and brought a copy to a bar-b-q just yesterday. It got played at least 3 times in row because everyone: old rockers, dready hippies, teenagers, senior citizens, all loved it. everyone danced and sang and had a great time. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in my little corner of it the paperboy is already a star. HIT DOWNLOAD ALBUM IMMEDIATLY!!!

New Old Soul

Laylavoce

Had the pleasure of hearing these songs live at Joe's Pub in New York for the CD release party. There is such energy in the music and in Reed's voice. It immediately made me feel as if I was in some Memphis club, digging the new tracks from the Stax family. Just doesn't get much cooler than that!

Boston is renowned for many things, but its soul/blues/R&B scene isn’t one of them, but that’s about to change with the advent of Eli “Paperboy” Reed and his backing band the True Loves. Reed and the Loves true love is ’60s R&B in all its multi-faceted glory, and they flawlessly re-create the feel and sound of the times on their superb debut album Roll with You. Reed seems to have imbibed the greats of the day with his first breath, and their influences seep across his performances and his songwriting. “Am I Wasting My Time,” for instance, is the best song Clarence Carter neither penned nor sung, but Reed makes you believe he did both. The title track “I’ll Roll with You” evokes Sam Cooke at his most emotive, “Am I Wasting My Time” captures the soulful depths of Otis Redding, while Reed is even “The Satisfier” for devotees of James Brown. There are echoes of Motown girl groups, the excitement of duos like Sam & Dave and the Isley Brothers, and splashes of Stax stars galore. Reed is a veritable one-man revival show, belting out his songs with a fervor that’s entirely authentic. The True Loves are his perfect match, as comfortable bounding through the kind of bouncy R&B that gave birth to rock, like “Won’t Give Up Without a Fight,” as they are with the funky “Satisfier.” They strut through the exhilarating “(Doin’ The) Boom Boom,” and shine on such downtempo, haunting numbers as “She Walks” and “It’s Easier,” with every arrangement highlighting their skills. Neither the band nor the singer hit a single false or wrong note within this set. This sounds like a greatest hits set from the day, although every single song within is new, a classic album that every R&B/soul fan must have. – Jo-Ann Greene
