This is the great leap for The Notwist and everyone in their orbit. Lali Puna comes roaring into existence with 2 albums, an EP and a dozen singles in the next 3 years, all winners; see Another Planet, No Encores. The Tied & Tickled Trio absorbed these sounds, even as Shrink incorporates T&TT's rapidly expanding jazz palette; see Moron, NL, Your Signs. There's so much to love, including Day 7("I count the letters of your name/I count the days 'til you are here again"). The more I listen to this, the more I feel it's their best. Certainly their most diverse, the most exhilarating to listen to as so much emerges. Absolutely essential.

This is no Neon Golden, but definitely shows you how they got to that sound. Chemicals is spectacular. Shrink is just the thing to hold you over until the new album comes out.

Their *fourth* album is where the notwist started to get really interesting (vs. simply good). Add in some more electronics (ahead of the indie rock curve) and horns to make it glitchy and catchy. Highly recommended.

The group’s second album has tighter pop songs (though the chords are still a bit derivative of Dino Jr.) and an edgier production sense reminiscent of Pan sonic and other electronic experimenters underlying on tracks like “Day 7,” “Another Planet” and “Chemicals.” The fusion of bubbly electronics and ragged guitar-pop works better than expected, lifting Shrink above a raft of other post-rock acts. – John Bush
