While still mining their American musical roots, Mick and Keef start to show off their songwriting chops.
2005 | Label: ABKCO (US)

On their fifth album inside of their first two years, the Stones were still leaning heavily on other composers, ranging from blues (Muddy Waters) and R&B (Chuck Berry) to country (Hank Snow's “I'm Moving On”) and jazz (Bobby Troup's standard, “Route 66″) for six of the 12 cuts.

Not that the Stones simply motored west. Just as they gave “Route 66″ a rollicking reading that'd never been heard before, they did fine by Keith Richards'personal guitar god, Berry, on “I'm Talking About You” (the Stones, or whoever did their typing, left off the “I'm”).

But, along with Out of Our Heads, this album signals the Stones'headstrong move into rock, and to their own compositions. The standout is their killer follow-up to “Satisfaction,” “Get Off of My Cloud,” with the Stones at their snarling best. “I'm Free” is another exuberant sign of young blokes feeling their oats. “Blue Turns to Grey” and “The Singer Not the Song” are nothing special; ditto “Gotta Get Away,” which served as the flip side to “As Tears Go By.” That tune, inspired by and written for Mick Jagger's girlfriend, Marianne Faithfull, is a pretty surprise coming from Jagger and Richards, who enjoyed setting detachment… read more »

It's great that emusic has managed to get all this stuff from the Stones back catalog. I have my mother's mono vinyl copy of this, purchased in London when it came out, & am happy to upgrade to mp3..... The early Stones covers of Motown & rock-n-roll classics are terrific.

The 13 Best Rolling Stones Songs You’ve (Maybe) Never Heard

By Yancey Strickler

As they branded themselves in a deserved fit of future-pique, the Rolling Stones are the world's greatest rock 'n 'roll band, with singles too numerous to name dominating our hearts and loins from 1964 on. Though that burst of dangerous, sexual charge that impregnated "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Let's Spend the Night Together," "Jumpin 'Jack Flash" and others has subsided some 40 years after the fact, the throbbing energy of London's favorite bad boys… more »

The last Stones album in which cover material accounted for 50 percent of the content was thrown together from a variety of singles, British LP tracks, outtakes, and a cut from an early 1964 U.K. EP. Haphazard assembly aside, much of it’s great, including the huge hit “Get Off of My Cloud” and the controversial, string-laden acoustic ballad “As Tears Go By” (a Top Ten item in America). Raiding the R&B closet for the last time, they also offered a breathless run-through of Larry Williams’ “She Said Yeah,” a sultry Chuck Berry cover (“Talkin’ About You”), and exciting live versions of “Route 66″ and Hank Snow’s “I’m Moving On.” More importantly, Jagger-Richards’ songwriting partnership had now developed to the extent that several non-A-side tracks were reasonably strong in their own right, such as “I’m Free” and “The Singer Not the Song.” And the version of “You Better Move On” (which had been featured on a British EP at the beginning of 1964) was one of their best and most tender soul covers. – Richie Unterberger
