Psyched-out carnival music tailor made for Animal lovers
Label: Aagoo Records / The Orchard

Au, a not-particularly-easy-to-classify band from Portland, play a weird, welcoming brand of quasi-ritual music with alternating strains of futurism and anachronism that run on parallel tracks. No talk of them can go long without mention of Animal Collective, but Au take that obvious influence into some less-than-obvious corners. Dense with handclaps and whoops of elfin provenance, “Are Animals” sounds like Animal Collective hanging out a carnival booth where feats of derring-do are rewarded with toy thumb pianos — but only before it swerves, halfway in, towards jazz-fusion with a squirming bass line and vintage organ sounds. The same sense of sepia-toned history drifts into “RR Vs. D,” which mixes would-be showtune murmurs with hints of barrelhouse piano before launching into full-bore parade music. Likewise “Prelude,” which slows down to an ambient crawl but still derives its drama from what sounds like an old accordion or hurdy-gurdy. Some of the other slower songs, given to wandering lines of languid guitar, sound slight and bare in comparison to Verbs'more unique highlights. But then there's an arresting exception like “Summerheat,” which builds an ethereal singing-saw mood into something more brash and cathartic with splashy cymbals, sliding strings and flecks of good old-fashioned…

Ehh...

The whole album isn't all that. It is kind of redundant but if you like that kind of stuff go for it. For sure I love the song "Sleep" though... it's really pretty!

What a shape-shifter's twisted-sister of an album. If these guys were a cult I'd join it. Are you sure there's only sugar and milk in my tea?

Good but not measuring up

discriminate-musicfan

I was hesitant to download this album purely on the samples, but the reviews swayed me otherwise. After several listenings, it is enjoyable, subtly textured and beautifully layered. However, I think that Animal Collective does a better job, with the carnival-communal style. Beirut is much better at creating brass instrumental-eclectic style, and The Books are better at creating a layered subtlety for the intelligent detailed listener. Still it has it's shining moments, and worth checking out if you can spare the credits..... Well after several months of listening, I am addicted. THis album must be listened to as a whole. The up moment of "rr vs. d" is good on its own, but comes as a great revelation if tempered by the trickle of the first few tracks

Great stuff, on first listen.

Brainlove

The best parts of Arcade Fire's passionate choruses, Fleet Foxes' en masse harmonies, Yeasayer's african-influenced flavour, Panda Bear's reverb-drenched tunefulness and Animal Collective's expansive sound. Great!

Hey, isn't that Yoko Ono in the chorus?

took some time

As with all "out-there" musics, it takes a couple of listens to distinguish the merits of an artist. At first, I also thought this was not worth giving a chance, giving all the hype behind it, and all the so called PYCH-hipsters getting behind this one.. But it is actually a very interesting and worthy effort..Ignore the hype, give it a couple of listens and it will grow on you...Its better than what he is being compared to.

Underwhelmed

ZGreen

Expected big things given the review on 17 dots, but this album is a bit of a let down. The music is very busy without being particularly interesting... certainly pales next to Person Pitch, which it's been compared to. Most of the album feels surprisingly boring given how much they have going on on every track.

Should be called...

TangerineLemming

Noodles & Company for their aimless musical tangents that wind hither and thither. The entire album is one long piece with 9 sections. They can't even be called songs because they don't stand on their own. If you like aimless atmospheric music, then go for it. But if you want some meat with your noodles, check out Efterklang or Anathallo.
