Extraordinary

xoconostle

This is one of Hassell's most compelling yet somehow least-known projects. Unfortunately, the eMusic staff mispelled Mr. Hassell's last name so this album does not come up when one searches on "Jon Hassell."

an otherworldly masterpiece

digaman

If you like Eno and other artists who play ambient with an edge, you owe it to yourself to download this album. Farafina's hypnotic rhythms have been looped and transformed into vast dreamscapes over which Hassell blows his poignant Miles-esque lines, and some of these tracks -- like "Masque" -- give the impression of great power held in reserve, like a smoldering volcano. A superb album.

Beautiful, other-worldly, hypnotic... The synthesis of the complex polyrhythms of Farafina and Jon Hassel's haunting trumpet lines is unique and engaging...

Taking a vacation from abstraction, Hassell kicks out a near set of dance tunes with Burkino Faso musicians, Farafina. So great is his exhilaration, he even gives us peeks at the natural timbre of his trumpet. It was produced by Hassell, Daniel Lanois, and Brian Eno. – Bob Tarte
