Lolla 2010

Phonograph

Saw them at Lolla - first time seeing or hearing them. Great show. Lots of on-stage energy and it comes through on the record. A solid record for a new band. If you think Ben Folds went mainstream then this might be your Ben Folds of old.

Solid album start to finish.

corrupttiki

Saw these guys live at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix, they brought a great amount of energy to a very small venue. The songs will stick with you and you'll catch yourself singing them. Five stars

Annoying

Muse8

Annoyingly cute and quirky, with an irritating vocalist who insists on emphasizing his unaesthetic pronunciation.

I'm so addicted to this album, I need a 12-step.

Can't stop listening. Tried. Can't. I love this album. It's funky and fun and light in a way that can brighten any day without being saccharine. I generally like piano rock in the way I "like" pizza: it tastes good, it's mostly filling, and it has a lot of variety. But this particular piano rock is different. I could have it all day every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Sure, I'll probably get tired of this album in a year or two... But I'm loving listening to it until then! Be sure to check out tracks 2, 3, and 6--the piano riffs on "Static to the Heart" are fantastically fun!

how to get dc kids to do more than headbop

boxycarsandwindowsdown

Fun, fun, fun! (But not in the cheap blonde sort of way-- this is the cute brunette in glasses who has great moves and also loves Tolstoy.) If you don't want to embarrass yourself by breaking out into dance while waiting for the bus, don't download this. The two different music-writing styles of the pianist and guitarist are perfectly complementary and make for an album you'll never tire of. I'm considering using this as a friend screener-- if you don't like this, I'm not sure I want to know you...

Great indie pop/rock

Zotzedwriter

These guys are as good as their name is bad – and this album is one of the best of '08. Excellent, energetic piano-driven indie rock/pop. The lyrics are also very good – ranging from knowing to smart-assy to compellingly peculiar. Perhaps my favorite line: "I couldn't tell if you were a bitch or totally bitchin'." Not a weak song in the bunch. I recommend downloading the whole thing, but if you want to dip your toe in first, try "Hold It In" and/or "Victoria."

Brilliant Piano-Based Power Pop

ptolemyclark

Any fan of The Format or Modern Skirts should download this no-questions-asked. Piano-based power pop from DC that is equal parts Ben Folds and Queen with an seriously fun & energetic live show. Start with "Good Day,""Hold It In," and "Matter of Time." It's feel-good music for smart people. I can't speak highly enough about these guys!
