Awe-ful, in the old english sense

Falcon13

This one album has changed my views of music entirely. The mixture of metal instrumentals and exceptionally strong and operatic vocals mesmerizes completely. I would recommend this for anyone who is looking for a new sound, as it is so different from anything I have ever heard. While listening to this I often find myself pondering the artistic forms of music, which is a totally new, though intoxicating, experience. For the past few weeks I have listened to nothing the same way as I had before, and the more I listen to this album the more I come to wish for more music in this style. Thus far, this is definitely the best I have found. I hope my words help others considering this album, it is certainly something very new and different if you have never stepped outside the mainstream box. But it does fill one with a sense of the natural order, as if opera and metal were made to be mixed together.

I think I was promised more...

...than I got. Still, downloading here is cheap, and there were a few good bits.

The album everyone raves about!

It will not stop the earth's orbit in its tracks. That said, "Oceanborn" sets the standard for the Nightwish sound. It all comes together here. I personally love the rockier side of Tarja's range, like on "Nightquest". For the ballad lovers, her interpretation of "Walking In the Air" is anthemic and lovely. Worth the hype!

goodbye

JonathanLaFey

Goodbye cadetphilip, we will not miss you. Don't let the door hit you on your way out. On the subject of this album, it's a good choice if you're into the whole beauty and the beast type of metal. I've always thought Tarja was overrated and wish Emusic would carry Tarot (Marco's other, better project) instead.

First of all, Oceanborn is a huge step when thinking about Nightwish’s debut album, Angels Fall First. All the elements of folk music and ambience are forgotten, and instead Nightwish have concentrated on using Tarja Turunen’s wide voice and playing pure heavy metal. Or, well, another description could be opera metal. Drama and a variety of melodies are used and effective, but overrule all expectations. Songs are catchy, but they have a long lifetime. Also, the whole band does great work: even though they seem like another Dream Theater-wannabe, Holopainen and Vuorinen use their instruments with patience and don’t slope into unneeded tricking. So everything seems to be alright, but the album as a whole lacks a little bit of diversity, and sometimes falls into repeating itself. The songs are, however, very strong, and the album as a whole works great. Oceanborn is, so far, Nightwish’s most successful album. – Antti J. Ravelin
