No, it's not a great name: "shoegazing." Very few artists who've actually played in that style like the term; Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai has called it "a dumb term made up by clueless... idiots... if someone called us shoegazers, I'd be pretty unhappy." The Lilys’ Zero Population Growth is Volume 15 of Darla Records’ Bliss Out series — one-off collections of the bleepy, gentle electronica on which the label tends to concentrate, along with its more standard indie releases. Lilys fans should take this as a warning: the record has almost nothing to do with the band’s regular album releases, drifting instead through six tracks of burbling, pop-oriented electronics. The results aren’t as dynamic or engaging as the work of some outfits who compose entirely in this vein, but that doesn’t seem to be the real aim of the blissouts. Most have stood as opportunities for bands with largely different sounds to create small and unassuming collections of entirely pleasant sound manipulation, and that’s certainly the case with Zero Population Growth. – Nitsuh Abebe
