Hypnotizing

carinnatarvin

A perfect album for listening to through earbuds while walking around the city, preferably a city with a waterfront, at dusk. I was doing this one time before a dinner date, and took an extra lap around the block because I needed to hear the end of "Copper and Malachite." PS-If you ever get a chance to see this guy live, do it. I was filled with pure gratitude at the end of the show I saw, and gave him a thank you hug!

great music

This album was recently given to me from a friend, and it immediately caught my attention. I particularly like "A few honest words" for its sound and its politics.

I like the "Guinness" comparison...

wurensh

... and I'd emphasize that if that pint is left to room temp a bit, the warmth and flavor of his words and cello come out even more. I saw him last night as a back-up for Vienna Teng... he's got a smooth voice and the lyrics rarely seem to skim at surface level - deep and full of soul. Thank you, Ben, for kicking off a great evening!

A cellist with a conscious

hossenfross

I simply cannot stop listening to this amazing album. Ben's voice is so sweet and soulful with the music accompanying this angelic voice suitably seraphic...it almost lulls you into a false sense of complacency. Then comes the hook, the anger, the poignant line in the middle of a song that shows how pissed off Ben actually is, and how he has something to say that we should all really listen to.

Like a pint of cold Guinness

Warm but refreshing, soulful without melodrama. His voice and the cello blend beautifully in a music genre I would never have imagined this instrument would work. Great find. Cheers!

Great in a very NPR kind of way

cotafloata

Make no mistake about it, this is great music for people who listen to NPR. Organic, witty, catchy, but not commercial. Liberal lyrics with great musicianship. Ben's an excellent cellist and singer and there's just the right amount of production here. He's great live too. My standout tracks are: It's Not Impossible, Change is Gonna Come, Panning for Gold, Bury with my Car, A Few Honest Words. Check out his work in Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet.

Like Andrew Bird, but not

eclecticus

This is a great blend of jazz and folk. Check out "Bury me with my car" and "It's Not Impossible"

Creative

Fresh, beautifully creative and thoughtful music! Timely political commentary is sprinkled amongst perfectly crafted and highly listenable songs. The cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" is INCREDIBLE.
