Can't really be the Gang without Huge, can it?

Raybeat

I'll stipulate to the band still having it after Dave Allen left, but not without both Hugo and Dave

What's with the ending?

Yowzer

I am puzzled by the abrupt way Second Life finishes. it seems like the tape ran out...or something? What? A fine, robust return to form, very enjoyable to those who adore the Go4 sound, and then its like there was a power failure and the stream stopped. I can't figure out if this is intentional or just sloppy. I love an abrupt ending, but this is something else. I think.

Better Than Nothin!

Rambler77

I'm must admit anything GOF related is a must have for me. I was happy to see I could grab this. Been waiting for a new album but I guess that's too much to ask for. So, I take this and wait and wait and wait. Dj is correct grab "Entertainment" it's a must have. Pick up "Solid Gold" if you can see why Entertainment is consider on of the top ten albums in punk/alternative history.

New single

djgolf

"Second Life" is the new single by Gang of Four, and on one listen it's similar to the better songs on "Shrinkwrapped" and "Mall." Dave Allen and Hugo Burnham have left the band (again - what year is this?) and the personnel on this recording is Andy Gill and Jon King with a different bassist and drummer. The various remixes of "Second Life" seem rather ho-hum, but the Tortoise remix of "Paralyzed" (an old Go4 song) is interesting if almost unrecognizable. Go4 completists should grab this, but if you're looking for an introduction to their work seek out their 1979 debut "Entertainment!" and own one of the two or three best albums of the entire punk/new wave movement.

Gang of Four

By Andrew Perry, eMusic Contributor

Named after the counter-revolutionary group who tried to take over China after Chairman Mao kicked the bucket, Gang of Four were one of the fiercest and most innovative British bands to emerge in the aftermath of punk. With 1979's Entertainment!, they essentially invented what is these days termed "post-punk" — a high-velocity collision of punky attitude and funky rhythm — a sound that resurfaced in post-millennial British alt-rock via Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and Futureheads. From the Vaults: The Volcano Suns

By Jack Rabid, eMusic Contributor

When a remarkable band breaks up at its peak, its fans rarely look to the drummer for salvation. Such was the surprise, then, accorded the emergence of this classic post-punk Boston trio in 1985 - the exciting consolation prize to an enlightened few still mourning the sudden, premature demise of Mission of Burma. (Burma, America's louder, heavier answer to Britain's obtuse Wire, were not the victim of the usual creative differences, burnout, road fatigue, instability… more »
