Rail Band, Belle Epoque Vol. 2: Mansa
2008 | Label: Sterns / IODA

This is the second volume of material from the Rail Band, one of the biggest forces in Mali Music during the 1970s. Sprightly, syncopated rhythms twist and turn as the band runs through a truly celebratory set. Besides the exotic instrumentation, Belle Epoque Vol. 2 really shines with its surprising funkiness check the superb sax n 'backbeat of "Finza," the bright, bouncy bass on "Konowale" and the sprawling, almost-calypso grooves on "Dugu Kamaleba." A truly inspired and unique afrobeat collection.

True, but...

I agree, Amelia meant to say Afropop. That said, Disk 1, Track 8 actually sounds like a Mali take on afrobeat -- interesting!

Afrobeat?

jackdaw

To claim that The Rail Band played Afrobeat, or that this is a collection of Afrobeat, displays an abysmal ignorance of African music. The Rail Band, later to become The Super Rail Band, were one of Mali's greatest bands and played the music of the Mande culture. It's not Afrobeat!
