A fitting end to this blue waver's time on Alligator.
1996 | Label: Alligator Records

Talk about going out in style: nothing against the fine sidemen on Roadhouse Rules, but Lonnie Brooks'relaxed, rhythmic and barrel-chested vocals carry his final Alligator effort (not counting the '99 Lone Star Shootout with Phillip Walker and Long John Hunter). He's at a roadhouse roar on the opening “Hoodoo She Do” and especially the cataclysmic “Rockin'Red Rooster” finale. His phrasing elsewhere ranges from more-in-sadness-than-anger on “Too Little, Too Late” to alternately pleading and stoic on “It's Your World” to defiantly lacerating on “Treat Me Like You Do Your Dog.”

Good Chicago Blues...

For me this is a very good example of Chicago Blues, most of it with a hammering beat, but some of it with the slow, smooth blues feeling. Between 7 and 8 on a 10 scale.

Lonnie Brooks Roadhouse Rules

They Say All Music Guide

Lonnie Brooks’ music comes from the R&B side of the blues. Brooks is a passionate singer with an intense rock-like guitar style. With the exception of “Roll of the Tumbling Dice” (a relaxed duet featuring the harmonica of Sugar Blue), the music on Roadhouse Rules is generally unrelenting in its ferocity, blues-oriented but also quite open to the influences of Stax-type soul and rock. The impressive musicianship and sincerity of Brooks’ music is probably easier to respect than to love; this release gives listeners a good sampling of his playing. – Scott Yanow
