A playfully ramshackle collection of songs suited for as many different occasions as they can find.
2008 | Label: Basin Street / IODA

On Hummingbird,Go!, Theresa Andersson counts as a citizen of two vastly different worlds. A longtime New Orleans denizen invested in a scene that spans decades, she played host to none other than Allen Toussaint during recording (of the song "Now I Know," with the legendary Touissant — as the story goes —"ferried in his champagne-colored Rolls Royce"). Then, as a native of Sweden, she also hooked up with the young Swedish indie-pop luminaries Tobias Froberg, Ane Brun, and Linus Larsson (a producer with ties to Peter, Bjorn & John). Somewhere in the middle lies Andersson, an enchanting singer-songwriter with an ear for time-tested atmosphere and suggestive eccentricity. "Na Na Na" starts off with a mix of moody horns (think the kind of sax favored by the old band Morphine) and clusters of drums that tumble repeatedly out of nowhere. Songs like "Birds Fly Away" and "The Waltz" sound almost like they could fit on an album by Norah Jones, but they ooze considerably more personality while spinning out skewed details— "Birds" by way of pizzicato strings and jaunty percussion, "The Waltz" by way of what are apparently soda bottles filled with liquid and tapped for… read more »

Pure Spirit

EMUSIC-007ADA00

Theresa's music is pure spirit from the soul that resonates in my heart every time I hear it. Watching her performances on youtube, she oozes music from her pores. I am sure that there were countless hours of work to make it look so easy, but she can even create enchanting music with just her voice and her feet. What a spirit! I hope she will be around to produce more for a long time.

Theresa Andersson's album Hummingbird, Go! (2008) delivers a distinctive Swedish pop sound alongside a soulful southern vibe. Well-crafted retro-pop number "Birds Fly Away" showcases Theresa's multi-instrumental skills as she uses everything from the looping vocals, violin, catchy hand claps to the funky drum sample of Smokey Johnson. DIY to the extreme, in her song "The Waltz" Theresa actually plays water-filled soda pop bottles in her kitchen. I just love this album what a find

They Say All Music Guide

Stylistically, Theresa Andersson has not been easy to pin down as a recording artist. Although the Swedish vocalist/New Orleans transplant has recorded some torchy, jazz-influenced material, some people have described her as a roots rock/Americana/country-rock type of artist and compared her to folks like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Loveless, Nanci Griffith, and Victoria Williams — and, to be sure, those have been valid comparisons at times. Listeners who have had a hard time categorizing Andersson will find that she isn’t any easier to categorize on Hummingbird, Go!, which finds her taking a somewhat psychedelic turn. Perhaps the best way to describe this 2008 release is “adult alternative pop/rock and folk-rock with soul and psychedelic influences.” Tracks like “Birds Fly Away,” “Locusts Are Gossiping,” “Clusters,” and “Na Na Na” have a hazy, spacy, dreamy quality; it’s the sort of haziness that makes you feel like you have stepped into the aural equivalent of a David Lynch film. And according to the credits, this 36-minute CD was recorded in an unlikely place: Andersson’s kitchen, where she had a band but made rhythmic use of things like wine glasses and beer bottles. But despite not being recorded in a conventional fashion — that is, in a recording studio or at a live gig — Hummingbird, Go! is not an exercise in strangeness for the sake of strangeness. Andersson brings a real sense of songcraft to the project, and many of her melodies are appealingly ethereal. Andersson doesn’t have a huge voice; her vocals are on the thin side. But she knows how to make the most of what she has; that was evident on previous releases and continues to be evident on the surprisingly psychedelic-influenced Hummingbird, Go! – Alex Henderson
