Overpowering Brass

JayberCrow

There is so much to like about this award winning recording. The tempos, the phrasing, the attack and the pure musicality. I could give it only four stars because of the balances between the parts of the ensemble. Quite frankly, the brass section at times overpowered the strings and woods or perhaps the strings were just a little anemic. This is most certainly the case in # 38. Mackerras plays this with great panache, but brash brass sound overwelms the listener and it becomes a distraction. Balances between the parts of the orchestra are better in # 39 or 40.

Incredible Immediacy

Bachman

Mackerras notes that these symphonies would have been originally performed in intimate surroundings similar to those pictures on the CD cover and with close accoustics. He also notes that individual members of the audience were welcome to stroll among the musicians. The sound engineers on this wonderful disc - containing possibly my preferred version of these perennial favourites of mine - have therefore placed individual microphones unusually close to the musicians in recognition of this pertinent point. The result is revelatory, and very, very exciting.

Unmissable

Superbly played. The speeds do tend to be rather fast, but there has obviously been huge attention paid to the balance of lines and phrasing that make these unmissable performances. Thank you, Sir Charles.

Mozart at his best

Natsgm

This is the Mozart you want -- A conductor who can really get inside the composer's skin, and sound that puts you right in the concert hall.

Sumptuous!

Sir Charles puts in a lot of energy in these last symphonies with his splendid orchestra. Especially no. 40 is marvellous, though the first movement of no. 38 is too fast for my part. But i cannot give it less than 5 stars for this is breathtaking! Peter
