Disarmingly simple folk-jazz sneaks past your defenses and hits you where you live.
Label: Native Language

As with Over and Over from 2006, Erin Bode demonstrates her disarmingly clear vocals and guile-free demeanor are better suited for original material that's on the folk side of jazz. It's risky to eschew the easy personae associated with female vocalists — sophisticated chanteuse, bawdy blues mama, earnest folkie — but Bode doesn't go for guises and doesn't over-sing, even on songs that at first blush can seem nursery-rhyme simple. But she knows how to loft her voice into the prevailing wind of the composition — its message, its rhythm, the depth of its instrumentation — and gather its force beneath her while retaining a feathery touch (but never as breathless as Norah Jones, to whom she is frequently compared). The way she finesses the pivotal change in sentiment on the lyric, “I surrender/Surrender to no one” on the title track is akin to one cutting raw gems into ring settings. And the way she embodies the whimsical-as-a-heart-attack love-song narrative on “Chasing After You,” yet can swoon with anxiety against the strings on the chamber-jazz oriented “Two,” and then cough up rue with such precise intonation (“How did I get so far away?” she wonders with equal parts alarm… read more »

DELIGHTFUL!

Bode has a tiny sound that really embraces the music. Folk? Jazz? I dunno. But I like it!!!

A Great Third Release

salmonhead57

Those of us who live in the St. Louis area are lucky to be able to see Erin Bode and her talented band often. For those less fortunate, at least you can reap the benefits of their hard work. No doubt the superior renditions here are the result of these songs having been performed many, many times prior to recording. Her first release is very good, the second better. But this latest is the product of an artist who has definitely hit her stride, both as a performer and songwriter (credit and kudos also to pianist and guitarist Adam Maness who wrote or co-wrote all of the material excepting Paul Simon's "Born at the Right Time"). They may be singers better known, but none better. Treat yourself to this collection, then make your best effort to see Erin & Company live. You will not be disappointed by either.

Reminds me of Frente!

Electicism101

I'm surprised that no one else has noticed how much she's like Frente! Well, I love this album. She sounds like a normal person rather than a poseur.

take more than a moment

When I first listened to Erin Bode's vocals on "time after time"...there was something moving with how she flowed in and out of notes like water going around rocks in a steam. Her newest release, Little Garden, is a treat to listen to. Take several moments, close your eyes, and just listen...it will be worth every minute.

Lovely

Hobekinus

A lovely album that reveals itself with repeated listenings. The exception being perhaps "Sydney Come Down", which has an immediate effect. The falling melody line, the chord changes, the appeal to self-obsessed Sydney all leave a lump in the throat. No problem with sound quality though. (Check your speakers?).

Bad Sound Quality

Samblatt

A lovely album; unfortunately the sound came through poorly with distorted bass. I would suggest downloading one track only to see how it sounds - maybe emusic has fixed the source.

WOW!

Really love this album. Sort of a jazz vocal with a little folk influence. Her voice is beautifully clear and smooth. Both the vocal style and the composition are simple and elegant. I highly recommend this album.

so disarmingly simple so pure so clear but oh so wonderful. I just love this woman's voice. Listen Fences and it must surely bring shivers down your spine - listen to the whole track on myspace then return and download!!!

They Say All Music Guide

Like Norah Jones, Erin Bode is a sweet-voiced singer with a jazz background and a healthy disregard for musical boundaries. Also like Jones, she gravitates towards quiet, gentle, straightforwardly melodic fare. On The Little Garden she continues her songwriting collaboration with bandmember and multi-instrumentalist Adam Maness, and the result is a bit more mixed than their previous work has been. It may be the deepening of their skill and their musical relationship, but their songs are getting more and more subtle as time goes on — sometimes a bit too subtle. “New England Friends” is a charming and deeply felt song, but as it progresses you start to get the feeling that it’s more about the words than the music (a tendency that we critics refer to as the Elvis Costello Disease); “Two” also feels a bit flat and uneventful, melodically speaking, and “Out of Time” spends way too much time on a two-chord vamp. But the rest of the album moves from strength to strength: “Sweater Song” is sad and heartrendingly lovely; “Sydney Come Down” rocks out gorgeously; “It’s All Your Fault” is both witty and soulful, with a brilliant horn chart. And Bode’s jazzy take on the Paul Simon song “Born at the Right Time” is a gem. Throughout the album, her voice is a complete joy, and redeems even the songs that are least interesting otherwise. – Rick Anderson
